BEFORE YOU BEGIN

You Don’t Have to Have Everything Figured Out.

Beginning a book-development or publishing relationship can bring up questions—especially when every company seems to use publishing language differently. Here are a few things to know before you submit your inquiry.

WORKING WITH KĪ

Clear Answers.
A Personal Process.

01

What kind of publishing company is KĪ Productions & Publishing?

KĪ is a boutique book-development and publishing services company. We provide individualized support from idea through publication, including development, coaching, collaborative writing, ghostwriting, developmental editing, formatting, production coordination and publishing assistance.

KĪ is not a traditional publisher: we do not acquire rights, pay advances or take ownership of an author’s work. We are also not a conventional royalty-sharing hybrid publisher. Authors pay for the professional services their books require; the finished book, copyright and royalties remain with the author. KĪ is intentionally small, selective and personal. We meet the book where it is.

02

Does the author pay for KĪ’s services?

Yes. KĪ is author-funded. No services or costs are assigned before we learn about the project. After review, KĪ provides a recommended scope, anticipated timeline and project investment. The author then decides whether to move forward.

03

Who owns the copyright?

The author. KĪ does not retain copyright.

04

Who receives the royalties?

The author. KĪ takes no percentage of book royalties. Publishing-platform, printing, distribution and retailer costs may still apply. Your story. Your book. Your rights.

05

Does KĪ accept every project?

No. KĪ maintains a limited roster and considers its capacity, the book’s needs, the services required and whether the project is a good fit. Submitting an inquiry does not guarantee acceptance.

06

Do I need a completed manuscript?

No. Authors may arrive with a completed manuscript, a few chapters, notes, journals, recordings, curriculum, presentations, research, personal stories or simply an idea. You do not need to know which service you need. Tell us where your book is. We’ll start there.

07

How are services and costs determined?

Every engagement is scoped individually—book by book and project by project, not through fixed packages. Recommendations reflect the book’s current stage, the author’s needs, and the work and professional resources required. You receive a clear scope, timeline and investment before work begins.

08

How long does the process take?

There is no standard timeline. Timing depends on the book’s starting point, the writing and development required, its type and length, the revision process, author responsiveness and production needs. A completed manuscript follows a different timeline than a book developed from an idea or interviews. KĪ discusses an anticipated timeline after evaluating the project.

09

What does KĪ handle through IngramSpark?

KĪ predominantly uses IngramSpark for professional print publishing and distribution. Depending on the project, we may format and prepare files, upload files and book information, review proofs, make corrections and guide the book through publication. We also help the author understand the decisions and account management involved. If another publishing path is more appropriate, KĪ will recommend it.

10

What happens after the book is published?

KĪ completes a final review of the printed book with the author and addresses desired corrections or production changes. The project concludes with a handoff and practical guidance so the author understands what comes next, including helpful marketing tips and resources.

11

Does KĪ provide book marketing?

KĪ is not a marketing agency and does not provide ongoing marketing management. We leave each author with practical tips, resources and guidance; the author is responsible for implementing the book’s continuing marketing.

12

Does submitting an inquiry create an obligation?

No. An inquiry creates no obligation to hire KĪ, purchase services, schedule a consultation or proceed. It simply allows KĪ to learn about the book. If the project appears to be a potential fit, we will explain the next step and the author decides what to do.

Still Not Sure Where to Begin?

You do not need a finished manuscript. You do not need to know which service you need. You do not need to have the entire process figured out.

Tell us about the book. We’ll start there.
